Dr. Marzano Expresses Concerns About the Misuse of His Research with Walkthroughs

I’d like to take a minute to clear up some confusion that I think is out there in the field, in the market place if you will, because my name is associated with some practices and products that it really shouldn’t be associated with.  Just for the record here, I have developed the observation protocol that you’ll see in iObservation.  I have not developed or been part of other observation protocols.  For example, the Power Walkthrough by McREL, the eWalks Teachscape and others like them.  And the only reason I mention this is because as I travel across the country people have said well we’re using your protocol and I think they’re talking about iObservation then they’ll say well no actually we’re using the Power Walkthrough or the Teachscape Walkthrough.  I have not been associated with those.

Now, if you’re using those, if schools or districts find these approaches useful they should continue to use them. There really is no one best way.  I’m sure if you talk to the folks who’ve developed those they would have compelling arguments why theirs is the best approach. And that’s why people create products; they think they’ve got something to add.  So if you’re getting great results with those, by all means continue to use them. 

But for the record, they do not reflect my view of best practice relative to feedback and observation and to assume that I am associated with these approaches would be inaccurate.  Again I want to qualify if you find those approaches useful, you should use those certainly.  But to associate my name with them is really inaccurate, there’s only one that I’ve developed and that’s the iObservation protocol.
