Dr. Marzano on Designing Effective Professional Development
Dr. Robert Marzano suggests schools and districts take a different approach to professional development. It starts by adopting a common language of instruction and delivering professional development based on the common language. Teachers identify specific areas of pedagogy in which they would like to improve and then engage in targeted PD based on the common language focused on their improvement areas.
This very powerful and cost-effective model can be implemented using Dr. Marzano’s research-based common language of instruction: The Art and Science of Teaching. As teachers develop expertise in each area of Dr. Marzano’s common language of instruction, they can deliver focused in-service sessions on those subjects. Those sessions are delivered by expert teachers from the same school or district who are proficient in the PD subject, knowledgeable of the common language of instruction, and familiar with the student body.
iObservation supports teachers to identify improvement areas in Dr. Marzano’s common language of instruction and to receive targeted on-demand PD in those focus areas. As teachers develop expertise, they can use Dr. Marzano’s resource library to support their colleagues’ growth and development in a community of professional practice.
